Evliya Çelebi 40 yıl Osmanlı İmparatorluğu ve ötesine seyahat etti. Onun 10 ciltlik kitabı Seyahâtnâme, Osmanlı edebiyatının en önemli eserlerinden biridir. Evliya’nın seyahatleri onu güneydeki Rus bozkırları, Viyana, Sudan ve Habeşistan’a götürdü. 1671-72’de hac görevini yerine getirmek için Mekke’ye gitti ve daha sonra Kahire’ye yerleşerek Seyahatname’yi yazdı.
Evliya Çelebi spent 40 years traveling all over the Ottoman Empire and beyond. His 10-volume book Seyahâtnâme (book of travels) is one of the most important texts of Ottoman literature. Driven by an “insatiable wanderlust”, Evliya’s travels took him to the southern Russian steppes, Vienna, Sudan, and Abyssinia. In 1671–72 he went on the Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca, and then settled in Cairo to write his book.
